Emma Ayres is a most unusual memoirist. Ostensibly this is the story of her adventures riding her bike, called Vita, from Shropshire to Hong Kong. Yes, you read that correctly. But it is also a journey in music, from the day her doughty mother asked her as a young child what instrument she wanted to play (she said cello, mother said violin), through the long but thrilling years of discovery learning to play, to her arrival as an accomplished orchestral and chamber viola player. The chapters are set out in the keys of the Western chromatic scale and her travelogue is punctuated with disquisitions on particular pieces of music. It is also a story of finding her identity not just as a musician but also as a gendered being. Ayres is wonderfully matter-of-fact about her sexual experiences from brief affairs on the journey to the deeper loves in her life. One of a select band of androgynous Englishwomen with a thirst for lonely, dangerous and exotic places, Ayres occasionally finds her manly appearance of great help to her in the countries she rode through where there were no women on the streets and the threat of Islamic religious police ever present. Ayres takes us with her on this physical, emotional and musical journey with grace and charm. Those of us lucky enough to know her dark honey voice from her morning radio broadcasts on ABC-Classic FM hear it again in our minds as we accompany her on this compelling odyssey as she finds her way through physical hardship and danger, fear, joy, memory and music. Highly recommended.Product details

Cadence Emma Ayres 9780733331893 Books Reviews
Wonderful read and clever interweaving of musical appreciation and anecdotes. Now I want to re-read with the CD playing through the relevant chapters.
Other books much enjoyed with this musical theme and accompanying music are Tim Winton's Dirt Music, and Vikram Seth's Equal Music, all to be recommended.
Thank you Emma for sharing your life so far....a very honest and brave account and such an entertaining read.
A most marvelous and inspiring book. Emma opens the door and invites you to share her life for a while. I couldn't put it down and then felt quite lost when I got to the last page. I could hear her voice long after finishing the book and her journey has stayed with me. Simply wonderful.
As a cyclist, traveler, non-fiction reader, admirer of Emma Ayres, but someone who knows nothing about music, I loved this book. I know many of these countries from my own travels many years ago, but that was by bus. Although I have traveled by bike a lot since, I still think Emma's adventure is almost super-human. You will love the connection between cycling and music, as I did, even if you know as little about one, the other, or both as I do.
I loved the book and found it quite fascinating. Having listened to Emma on radio added to the enjoyment.
The style of weaving her musical history, personal challenges and her travels makes for a pleasant read. While it did not have me on the edge of my seat, I looked forward to each new chapter.
I just didn't want to put it down
The openness and candor as Emma explores her difficult childhood and how it has shaped and inspired her is fantastic.
The musical education that is woven into this amazing journey of one world class violinist as she cycles alone from England to HongKong.
It made laugh and cry and read on in open mouthed wonder
Emma Ayres takes the reader on a journey through her life and music as she rides her trusty bicycle, Viva, from London to Hong Kong. Her resilience and bravery in the face of adversity is inspiring. Her openness to new experiences and to humans throughout the world is admirable & heart-warming. Thanks for taking us with you Emma even though at times the musicology was too complicated for me.
